Two adults arrested after two-year-old found in cargo area of U-Haul

HURRICANE – Officers arrested a Wisconsin woman and a man believed to be her son after finding the woman’s two-year-old in the back of a U-Haul in Hurricane.
 
Nancy Perkins, media spokesperson for the Hurricane Police Department, said an off-duty officer stopped for gas at a self-serve gas station near the Walmart Distribution Center when a woman, who had allegedly been pounding on the gas station door, asked the officer for assistance. The woman asked the officer why no one was inside. Concerned that the something was wrong and worried that the woman had been doing drugs, the officer called dispatch for assistance.
 
A Hurricane officer arrived on scene, and upon further investigation, found a two-year-old in the cargo area of the U-Haul with a 19-year-old male and his 16-year-old girlfriend. An elderly woman was also found in the passenger seat of the U-Haul, Perkins said. The family stated they were traveling the states. A road map, clothing and marijuana were also found in the U-Haul, she said.
 
Perkins said the 16-year-old was taken to juvenile detention after allegedly hiding marijuana.
 
The 19-year-old was arrested and charged with endangering a child/elderly, possession of paraphernalia and possession of marijuana.
 
The woman was arrested on several charges, including open container, endangering a child/elderly, possession, DUI and driving on a suspended license.
 
The elderly adult was taken to Dixie Care and Share, and the two-year-old was taken into custody by the Department of Child and Family Services.
