DOCUTAH to host a screening of ‘The Tillman Story’

ST. GEORGE – The Utah Film Circuit travels the state with The Tillman Story and its filmmaker Amir Bar Lev. DOCUTAH joins the SLC Film Center in hosting a screening on Friday, May 27, at 7:30 p.m. in the Eccles Main Stage Theater on the campus of Dixie State College. This screening is free and open to the public and patrons will have the opportunity to discuss viewpoints with the filmmaker during the question and answer session following the screening.

The Tillman Story deals with sensitive subject matter that is forthright and thought provoking. The film has been given an “R” rating for language.

Amir Bar Lev explains that the Tillman family has served their country’s armed forces dating back to the Civil War. Bar Lev notes that the film tells the story of the families disappointment when people do not live up to the high ideals of integrity and accountability that the military sets for it. “This is not an antiwar film,” says Amir Bar Lev. “The film isn’t a referendum on our current engagements overseas; it’s a story about the sabotaging of soldiers’ sacrifice for cheap political stunts. So far I haven’t met one soldier that took offense.”

DOCUTAH Festival Director Phil Tuckett is optimistic that the film will be received warmly at the event and is prepared to engage in an inspiring group discussion on the subject of The Tillman Story.

“We see conflict and controversy through documentary films nearly every day, that is the beauty of our product,” Tuckett said. “This is a thought-provoking film that deals with a subject matter that will engage the audience. To have Mr. Bar-Lev, the actual film director take time after the film for Q&A will be a marvelous academic experience. Let’s get all the voices in the room and have a great discussion. There is no better place to accomplish this than on a college campus.”

DOCUTAH is the Southern Utah International Documentary Film Festival presented by Dixie State College in St. George. The 2011 festival dates are September 8 – 17 with screening locations in St. George, Springdale and Kanab. Festival goers come for the films, stay for the scenery and experience inspiration.
