ST. GEORGE – The St. George Fire Department will be holding an open house today at the new fire station, located at 1096 Blue Grass Way, on the corner of Blue Grass and Pioneer.

Fire Chief Robert Stoker said the new station has been in the planning stages for many years and is paid for by impact fees. The new building is 11,000 square feet, with an 800 square foot police sub station.

He said the new station, No. 8, looks much like station No. 7, which is located in Dixie Downs. It has sleeping quarters for eight personnel, although it will only house three full time firefighters 24 hours a day until the city grows large enough to man the station with eight personnel.

According to Stoker, the station allows the city to keep its ISO rating and will allow faster service to areas of St. George that are growing quickly. The city has another five or six stations planned in the next 15-20 years, he said, in areas like Little Valley and Green Valley.

Currently, three of the eight fire stations are manned full time.

The open house will be held tonight from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
