ST. GEORGE – The Southern Utah Pistol & Revolver Club is hosting the United States Practical Shooting Association’s Area 1 Championship this week.  Area 1 encompasses seven western states, including Alaska and Hawaii, but the Championship in progress includes 430 shooters from 27 states.

The matches are held at the club’s Southern Utah Shooting Sports Park, located adjacent to the Washington County Regional Park / Fair Grounds, and spectators are welcome. The matches began Wednesday and continue through Sunday morning.

Ken Nelson, president of the SUPR club is the reigning champion for his particular gun and school level, his son holds championships as well, including the junior championship.

“We divide our sport up so that there is a way for people of all levels to compete,” Nelson said.

The event is open and free to the public, and will include a lot of things for people to enjoy on Saturday, including vendors from Springfield Armory, STI, Glock and more.

And, there will be guns there for people to shoot, also at no cost except for a minimal charge for ammo in some cases (for example, machine guns which go through alot of ammo very fast).

“Come on out and see our facility,” Nelson said, “it’s one of the nicest anywhere, certainly in the west.” He said that most people local to Washington County don’t even know the Sports Park is out there, that the people from around the country here for the match have remarked repeatedly at the quality of the park.
