ST. GEORGE – A motorcycle accident occurred on I-15 Thursday afternoon.

Cpl. Todd Johnson of the Utah Highway Patrol said that at 2:25 p.m., Evert Dykhuizen, 62, of  Hurricane,  crashed his motorcycle at milepost 8 while traveling northbound. Witnesses said the motorcycle went off the left shoulder, into the median and hit the cable barrier. The rider’s condition at the time was described by Johnson as “extremely critical.”

Investigators said there was a motorcycle helmet at the scene of the crash, but it is believed at this point that the rider was not wearing the helmet, and that it may have been attached to the motorcycle instead. It was later determined the helmet was not used.

The rider passed away around 3:20 p.m., after being transported to the hospital.

Both northbound and southbound lanes of I-15 were initially closed, though reopened soon after. However, the left lane of I-15 northbound remained closed until just after 4 p.m.

This accident remains under investigation.
