ST. GEORGE – The Dixie State College of Utah Symphony Band will make its 2012-13 season debut with the annual Fall Concert on Oct. 5.
Held in the Dolores Doré Eccles Fine Arts Center Concert Hall on the DSC campus, the concert will feature stirring compositions performed by the symphony band, including “Black River Overture” by Thomas Doss, “Fantasia on ‘Black is the Color of My True Love’s Hair’” by Mark Camphouse, “Sea Songs” by Ralph Vaughan-Williams and “Kilimanjaro, An African Portrait,” by Robert Washburn, a musical portrayal of the East African countries of Kenya and Tanzania. The band will also perform “The Heart of Madness” by Mark Lortz, a thrilling musical adaptation of the works of Edgar Allan Poe, and end the evening with “Ghost Train” by Eric Whitacre, which tells the folklore legend of the supernatural machine that roars out of the night through forgotten towns and empty canyons.
The DSC Symphony Band is under the direction of conductor Gary Caldwell, who is entering his 34th year as director of bands at DSC. The ensemble will perform twice this semester, including their annual Christmas concert on Nov. 30. They will also perform a pair of concerts during the 2013 spring semester, on Feb. 22 and Apr. 19.
The concert will begin 7:30 p.m. General admission tickets will be available at the door for $5; DSC students and staff with identification can enter for $1. Patrons may also purchase advance tickets at the Eccles Fine Arts Center box office, Avenna Center box office or online.
