UPDATE Dec. 10, 2012 – The Holiday Pet Super Adoption event was a success. Barbara Williamson, for Best Friends Animal Society, said that there were 117 adoptions, exceeding the event’s goal.
ST. GEORGE – The community is invited to play a pivotal role in helping save lives by adopting a rescued homeless pet at the area’s first Holiday Pet Super Adoption event this weekend at the St. George PetSmart.
More than ten animal rescue groups and shelters from Southern Utah will come together Friday from 12-5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The goal is to find forever homes for 100 cats and dogs.
The Kanab-based Best Friends Animal Society is sponsoring the event as part of its work to end the killing of adoptable animals in the nation’s shelters. It is also funded in part by PetSmart Charities.
“The Holiday Pet Super Adoption provides an exciting, lifesaving opportunity for our region and we are counting on our community to come together and adopt a wonderful pet or temporarily foster a homeless animal in need,” Events Supervisor Tami Simon said, for Best Friends Animal Society No More Homeless Pets Network.
Following the event, any pets that do not find their forever homes will need a temporary one with foster families.
“Fostering is such a rewarding experience; you get the company of these amazing pets (that) you know owe their lives to you (for) opening your home to them temporarily,” Holly Sizemore said, as director of Best Friends’ National Programs and a longtime foster parent herself. “And when your foster gets a permanent home, you (can) open your home to the next animal in need. Our family has helped save over two dozen lives and that’s a great feeling.”
