ST. GEORGE – One of the many eye-catching features at the 2013 St. George Area Parade of Homes comes in the form of metal work in design by sculptor Jacob Dean. Although every home is worth seeing, there are always a few features that tend to get the parade goers talking; this year, house number 20 on the parade route in the Stone Cliff community of St. George is an attention-getter.
Southern Utah’s Parade of Homes has proven, year after year, to offer a display of unique building ideas, innovative technology and beautiful design. Interior Designer Beth Hadlock worked with metal sculptor Jacob Dean to create the perfect feel for the inside of this multimillion dollar Stone Cliff home.
From first approaching the house, to moving through its 6,000 square feet, the industrial vintage theme blends seamlessly with a comfortable vintage feeling. The home is accented with custom fabricated lighting, as well as a large, custom wall clock built around a vintage metal sign. Comments on design and innovation are heard constantly as the paraders take in the ambience.
Cedar City based metal sculptor, Jacob Dean, is blazing paths into the area of metal sculpture with his 18 years of experience in unique design, and his talent for facing such a challenging medium.
“It’s hard, it’s laborious, it’s tedious and it’s validating to create something in steel,” Dean said. “Every once in a while I take some pleasure in doing functional items, but really I do steel sculpture.”
Some of his work can be seen in Player’s Sports Grill and in the home of the well-known Jeremy Johnson.
Although there are a lot of people who are able to do some form of metal work, Dean’s focus on naturalism adds a level of artistic integrity and difficulty that sets him off from other designers. His humble exploration into this relatively untouched area of metal work gives his pieces a unique look.
Dean draws an important distinction, that metal sculpture is quite different than simple welding, in the same way that stone cutting is different from Michelangelo’s work. There is so much more that goes into it. Talent, artistic ability, and inspiration all contribute to the exclusivity of this medium.
