New report shows Obamacare eliminates 2.3M American jobs in 2021

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch, ranking member of the Senate Finance Committee, today issued the following statement after the Congressional Budget Office’s, CBO, Budget and Economic Outlook found that the President’s health care law would eliminate 2.3 million American jobs in 2021 – 1.5 million more than the previous estimate of 800,000 jobs lost.

Hatch said:

Today CBO delivered terrible news to the millions of Americans looking for work. Obamacare, the President’s signature domestic policy achievement, will lead to more than 2 million fewer jobs and hurt much-needed economic growth. A direct threat to the long-term health and prosperity of our nation, this law must be repealed. Its impact and consequences are too great. It’s time this Administration start working with Congress to advance initiatives that will actually spur job growth in our nation. We can start by implementing shovel-ready projects like the Keystone XL Pipeline and enacting job-creating Trade Promotion Authority legislation.

It will be really good news if YOUR job was eliminated too. And your cronies.

Now tell us what you are going to do about it !!!!

Once again, Mr. Hatch got the story completely wrong. The report did not say the ACA would cause the loss of jobs. Rather, it said it would allow people to voluntarily leave the workforce, free of the misery of sticking with a job purely because “if I quit I lose my health insurance.” We likely all know people formerly in this trap, who now have reasonable health insurance options outside of employer provided plans. The report specifically states that unemployment and underemployment will NOT be significantly affected by the ACA.

Mr. Hatch, are you not able to read with adequate comprehension, or are you being deliberately obtuse to promote your political ideology? Either way, statements like this press release prove you are unfit for continued public service.

This idea that Obamacare is going to eliminate 2.3 million jobs is just wrong. What the report said is that 2.3 million people will quit their jobs. Why would they do that? Think of the 62-year-old who has enough money to retire on, but has to keep his job because Medicare doesn’t kick in until 65. With Obamacare, he can now afford to buy an individual insurance policy which before would have been outlandishly expensive. Or think of the young mother who would rather stay home, but has to keep her job for the benefits.

Nice try, Senator Hatch. Try working on your reading comprehension skills because this is just embarrassing.

Here’s the exact wording in the CBO report:

“The estimated reduction stems almost entirely from a net decline in the amount of labor that workers choose to supply, rather than from a net drop in businesses’ demand for labor, so it will appear almost entirely as a reduction in labor force participation and in hours worked relative to what would have occurred otherwise rather than as an increase in unemployment (that is, more workers seeking but not finding jobs) or underemployment (such as part-time workers who would prefer to work more hours per week).”

With a reduced labor supply, wages will likely have to increase. With fewer people wanting jobs, the unemployment rate will fall.

in other words, it’s a good thing. Thanks Orrin for always being straight with us…NOT!!!

  • Bender February 5, 2014 at 11:51 am

So the net result is more jobs and a lower unemployment rate? Again Senator Hatch’s staff can’t quite bring themselves to set aside petty partisan sniping and govern maturely. Time to step aside old man.

Who will pay for the healthcare of the 2.3 M that could decide to leave their jobs? The government? Where does the government get the money to support the healthcare costs of those the decide to quit? When the potential of 2.3 Million people are no longer working… it can’t be a good thing.

Go to your room Nate, the adults are trying to talk.

  • philiplo February 5, 2014 at 9:09 pm

They pay for their own. With rates more reasonable and no surcharges (or outright denials) for pre-existing conditions, people can now start their own business, or be a stay-at-home parent while their spouse works, or any of dozens of other scenarios. Leaving a job does not equate to going on the dole.
