ST. GEORGE — On a remote section of Old Highway 91 a one-car rollover Thursday resulted in a woman’s Camry flipped upside down on the opposite side of the lane she was originally traveling in. The woman, whose car was totaled, walked away uninjured, thanks to her seatbelt and airbags, an officer on scene said.

Around 10 a.m. Thursday a 35-year-old woman from St. George was driving about 4 miles north of the Arizona border. She was driving around a curve at excessive speeds according to a witness, Utah Highway Patrol Trooper John McMahon said.

After investigating the crash, there was evidence that she went off the right edge of the curve, then overcorrected, which caused her to cross into the oncoming traffic lane. She swerved slightly off the road and came in contact with the gravel. Then, “the wheel dug in to the gravel and caused her to roll over,” McMahon said. Her car landed upside down next to a hill.

She was treated and released at the scene by the medical workers from the Ivins Fire Department and her car was totaled and towed from the scene.

The woman was cited for failure to operate within a single lane.

“I always tell people ‘thanks’ when they wear their seatbelts,” McMahon said. “Make sure you buckle up because that’s what saved her.”

One deputy from the Washington County Sheriff’s Department, and two troopers from the Utah Highway Patrol along with rescue workers from the Ivins Fire Department all assisted with this accident.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement and may not contain the full scope of findings.
