State track meet: DH boys win 2nd straight 3A crown; Thunder girls take 2nd to Park City

PROVO — Senior Blake Kvarfordt and junior Chandler Swaney gave Desert Hills four gold medals — 40 team points — as a huge head start against the rest of the 3A field and the Thunder led virtually from wire to wire to take the 3A boys track state championship.

Kvarfordt defended his own individual golds in shot put and discus, winning both easily. Swaney, meanwhile, proved to be the best jumper in 3A by taking the long jump and the high jump. Swaney also anchored the DH silver-medal winning 4×100 team and earned points for Desert Hills by placing fourth in the 100-meters and the 200-meters.

DH also got big points in the 3,200. Garrett Marsing of Carbon won the race, but the Thunder placed four of the next five finishers with Joshua Thatcher, Ben Powell, John McPhie and Joshua McPhie.

The Thunder also took gold in the 4×400 and silver with Caleb Whitney in the 110 hurdles.

3A boys team scores

1. Desert Hills, 131; 2. Richfield, 105; 3. Stansbury, 59; 4. Juab, 53; 5. Hurriane, 47; 6. Carbon, 34; 7. Cedar, 33; 8. Dixie, 28; 9. Snow Canyon, 23; 10. Morgan, 21.

On the girls side, Park City took a big win, but Desert Hills placed well and ended up in second place. Olivia Leavitt won triple gold, taking the 200-meters and both hurdling events (100 and 300). DH also got gold in the girls long jump with Abby Taylor bringing it home.
