WASHINGTON  CITY – Southwest Mosquito Abatement and Control District has scheduled a public hearing for the 2015 district budget and amendments to the 2014 district budget on Thursday. Citizens are encouraged to attend and to provide oral, written, or mail-in comments.

The district specializes in controlling mosquito populations in the county, using pesticides to kill mosquitos and prevent them from becoming a nuisance or spreading unwanted diseases. In Washington County, there have been some cases of West Nile Virus, Southwest Utah Public Health Department spokesman David Heaton said.

“There were no reported cases in 2014,” Heaton said, “but in 2013, we had two confirmed human cases. A lot of times in the state, we’re the first area to detect West Nile Virus because our mosquito season is a little longer.”

For information concerning the budget or amendments as well as special needs accommodations, please contact District Manager Sean Amodt at telephone 435-627-0076.
