LAVERKIN – A Hurricane man was arrested Tuesday after a LaVerkin City Police officer found him in possession of, and driving under the influence of, marijuana.
Late Tuesday night, Officer Jacob Bulkley made a traffic stop in LaVerkin for a headlight violation. After approaching the vehicle, Bulkley found that 20-year-old Jorge Arturo Becerra Delbillar was attempting to conceal a glass jar between the driver’s side door and the driver’s seat of his vehicle; the jar contained a “green, leafy substance” that Bulkley believed to be marijuana, according to a probable cause statement filed by Bulkley in connection with Delbillar’s arrest.
Delbillar told Bulkley he did not have a Utah driver’s license and that his Idaho driver’s license had expired the previous month. Bulkley instructed Delbillar to step out of the vehicle, and Bulkley learned from dispatch that Delbillar had three active warrants for his arrest. Dispatch confirmed Delbillar had never obtained a Utah driver’s license.
After Bulkley informed Delbillar that he was under arrest for the three active warrants, Delbillar admitted the substance in his car was marijuana and that he had smoked marijuana earlier that evening.
Delbillar also had a “large folding knife’ in his possession,” according to the statement. His arrest was made within 1,000 feet of a church, causing his drug-related charges to be enhanced.
Delbillar was arrested on the three active warrants – one a third-degree felony, one a class B misdemeanor and the other a class C misdemeanor. He was additionally charged with one class A misdemeanor for drug possession, one class A misdemeanor for possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person, one class B misdemeanor for driving under the influence, one class B misdemeanor for possession of drug paraphernalia, one class C misdemeanor for driving without a valid driver’s license, and one class C misdemeanor for a headlight violation.
Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
