DUI stop turns into chase down Main Street, 2 arrested

CEDAR CITY – Two people were taken into custody by police Monday evening for alleged drunk driving and several other charges after a DUI investigation turned into a pursuit down Main Street.

Around 6:15 p.m. Monday, Cedar City Police officers had a couple stopped in a parking lot at 138 South Main St. for possible DUI, according to a news release from the Cedar City Police Department.

Katrina Cheree Box, 28, of Towaoc, Colorado, was outside of her car and undergoing field sobriety tests with officers. Passenger Anthony Gustavo Mike, 31, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, who was still in the car, then moved into the driver’s seat, according to the statement.

Mike then started driving the vehicle, and made four small circles in the parking lot at a high rate of speed before fleeing the area, according to the news release.

When Mike fled in the vehicle, Box tried to escape and run to the car. She was restrained by the police, and allegedly began to fight with officers and attempt to assault them.

Police pursued Mike down South Main Street, and during the pursuit, Mike ran red lights and drove recklessly, according to the news release. He began to slow the car around 900 South Main St., but began to move into the oncoming traffic lane at the same time.

An officer placed his car between the oncoming traffic and Mike’s vehicle, which then crashed into the side of the police car at very slow speed. The collision ended the chase and both Mike and Box were taken into custody.

The police car and the suspect vehicle each sustained minor damage, and no one was injured during the incident.

Mike was booked into the Iron County Correctional Facility for third-degree felony failure to stop at an officer’s command; and four class B misdemeanors for reckless driving, DUI, resisting/interfering with arrest, and failing to stop at a red light. He was charged with an additional class B misdemeanor as a part of an outstanding warrant. According to booking information, his bail is set at $8,830.

Box was also booked into the Iron County Correctional facility for four class B misdemeanors for DUI, interfering with an arrest, intoxication and open container of alcohol in a vehicle, and a class C misdemeanor for disorderly conduct. Her bail is currently set at $2,580, according to booking information.

Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.

Evil Twins Mommy I’ve seen your kind and loving comments on all of these poor misguided individuals today who have run afoul of the evil men in blue and brown. I agree that they should get love and affection, and find it so generous of you to bail them out and allow them to move into your home with your family. This is the ultimate expression of the Christmas Spirit. In order to help you with this fine work, let me know where to send it, and I’ll send you two bits to assist with it.
