Witnesses help determine fault in State Street collision; STGnews Videocast

HURRICANE — Witnesses at the scene of a collision were able to confirm that a driver failed to obey a traffic signal at the intersection of 700 West and State Street in Hurricane Thursday morning, causing a two-vehicle accident.

At approximately 11:52 a.m., a 48-year-old woman was driving a silver 2006 Toyota Matrix south on 700 West. She approached the State Street intersection, pulled into the left turning lane and proceeded to turn on a red light in front of a 55-year-old woman driving a white 1995 Chevy Astro van east on State Street in the outside lane, Hurricane City Police Sgt. Brandon Buell said.

The driver of the van tried to stop but wasn’t able to prevent the collision, Buell said.

The driver of the van had neck and shoulder pain after the accident due to rubbing from her seat belt but refused medical attention and declined ambulance transportation to the hospital. No other injuries were reported.

The van sustained moderate damage and was able to be driven from the scene, while the Toyota was towed with severe damage, Buell said. The scene of the accident was cleaned and cleared quickly by the Hurricane City Police and Hurricane City Fire departments.

The driver of the Toyota was cited for failure to obey a traffic signal, which was determined with the help of witnesses on scene, Buell said.

“We want to thank the witnesses who stayed to help us with this accident,” he said. “These statements are very beneficial to determining the cause of accidents like these.”

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
