Lions Club hosts 46th annual Dixie Downs horse races

ST. GEORGE – And they are off! To the races that is as the St. George Lions Club hosts the 46th annual running of the Dixie Downs horse races Saturday on the Dixie Downs track at the Washington County Regional Park, 5500 W. 700 South in Hurricane.

Races will be held Saturday and again on April 18 – 1 p.m. both days.

Saturday’s races will bring horses and jockeys from near and far as they participate in trials in different race categories, race chairman Ryan Bowers said.

There will be futurity races – 2-year-old horses, many of whom are running their first races, Bowers said; and derby races – 3-year-old horses.

The April 18 races will showcase thoroughbreds and a couple other maiden races, Bowers said.

Concessions will be available at the races and will feature the Lions Club’s “famous hot dogs” as well as hamburgers, cheeseburgers and beverages.

Seating for the races in on aluminum grandstands and, Bowers said, on a bright, sunny day it is a good idea to bring an umbrella for shade.

The Lions Club is a charitable, service-oriented club that sponsors many organizations and individuals in the community, from breast cancer research to scholarships and more. Proceeds from the horse races as well as all Lions Clubs events go directly to helping others.

“As a Lions Club we all get together and do this (race),” Bowers said. “Every penny we make goes to charity.”
