Orchestra of Southern Utah honors heroes with concert, dinner; photos invited

CEDAR CITY — The Orchestra of Southern Utah is hosting a dinner for veterans and a concert titled “Remembrance of the Victory in Europe” on April 16 at 6 p.m.

On May 8, America will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Victory in Europe.

With appreciation and thanks to veterans, the Orchestra of Southern Utah extends veterans an invitation to a complimentary dinner in their honor. The dinner will take place at the Heritage Theatre, 105 N. 100 East in Cedar City and is free for all military veterans and those on active duty. Others are invited to the dinner as well for $3 each with purchase of a concert ticket.

Tickets are required due to limited seating; reservations and purchases may be made by telephoning 435-233-8213 or at the Heritage Theater box office on a first come, first served basis.

The concert is in remembrance of May 8, 1945. when the enduring determination and sacrifice of American veterans was rewarded with the news that the war with Germany was over.  Victory in Europe had come.

The war continued for over three years and more than 400,000 soldiers, sailors, marines, airmen and military personnel lost their lives or remained missing in action by the end.

Following the dinner, the Orchestra of Southern Utah will perform the concert “Remembrance of Victory in Europe” at 7:30 p.m. Admission to the concert is $5 for veterans and students, and $10 for adults. Because the concerts are recorded, it is requested that children under the age of 6 not attend.

The Orchestra is delighted to present their very own principal cellist, Nina Hansen, as she performs “Kol Nidrei” by Max Bruch. This piece honors the beauty and rhapsody of Hebrew melodies.

Violist Ling Yu will perform “Ernest Bloch’s Prayer,” which honors the Jewish Prayer.

Patriotic pieces included in the program are “Fanfare for the Common Man” by Aaron Copland, “Victory at Sea” by Richard Rodgers, and the theme from the movie “Lawrence of Arabia.”

For all veterans and their families, the Orchestra of Southern Utah will perform two movements of Antonin Dvorak’s “Symphony No. 9” and also “The New World Symphony.”
