SALT LAKE CITY — Gov. Gary Herbert reported for jury duty Tuesday morning in the Provo 4th District Court for a case involving driving under the influence.
According to a media release from the governor’s office, the judge dismissed the governor, who was one of 35 potential jurors interviewed to serve on the case.
It is important, Herbert said, for everyone to step up and fulfill responsibilities when they are called to serve.
“At the end of the day, I can tell you I feel good about our process, about jury selection and about the judges who serve on the bench,” Herbert said in the release. “The process works very well in Utah and we have very good people who participate and perform their civic duty.”
While speaking with the media prior to departing from the courthouse, Herbert said his experience with the jury process went well, and the group featured a variety of people from all walks of life in Utah County.
Ironically, Herbert said, an instructional video shown to the potential jurors explaining the jury process said no one is exempt from jury duty — even the governor.
“ … (That) brought a little bit of a chuckle into the group,” Herbert said.
While the governor was not selected to be on the sitting jury, he said he is still honored to have been there as part of his civic duty.
The governor will now be able to meet the remainder of his scheduled commitments, the release said. He departs for a Western Governor’s Association Meeting in Lake Tahoe, Nevada, Tuesday evening, where the group will discuss a number of issues including drought, transportation and energy.

People show up for jury duty everyday and it doesn’t make the news. A good story would be: governor Herbert fails to show up for jury duty, bench warrant issued…now that’s a news story.
LOL It’s a nice thought.
Old Herby should be the one on trial…
