ST. GEORGE — Thomas “Ike” Urquhart of Dixie Applied Technology College finished in first place in the secondary division of CNC milling competition. Ike Urquhart took home the gold medal while competing against 31 other state champions at the National Skills USA Competition in Kentucky.
Ike Urquhart, a senior at Dixie High School, has been attending the DXATC for two years and will graduate in the coming weeks with a certificate in CNC, or computer numerical control, Machining.
“Ike has been preparing for this competition for the past two years,” DXATC instructor Mike Shrout said. “Because of his ability to envision and create, he came out victorious. Ike has an exceptional ability I have never seen before.”
Ike Urquhart and his father, Sen. Steve Urquhart, toured Massachusetts Institute of Technology shortly after the Skills USA competition, an institution Urquhart will be applying to later in 2015.
“Much of my success at Skills USA was due to the training I received at DXATC and the dedicated instructors that trained and mentored me,” Ike Urquhart said. “The experience I had at DXATC will give me an edge over so many others as I pursue a career in engineering.”

Gordon Zitting, also a DXATC student, placed fourth nationally with an overall percentage of 91.6 percent. Zitting competed in electrical construction wiring against 28 other post-secondary students from around the country.
The conference was attended by 6,000 outstanding career and technical education students from around the country, each participating in one or more of the 100 different trade and technical competitions.
Skills USA is the national organization for students in trade, industrial, technical and health occupations education. It sponsors the Skills USA Championships annually to recognize the achievements of career and technical education students and to encourage them to strive for excellence and pride in their chosen occupations.
