University vies for ‘Most Outdoorsy’ national title; join the challenge with your photos

CEDAR CITY — Southern Utah University is competing against 56 schools across the country for the title of “Most Outdoorsy in the Nation” through the Outdoor Nation’s Campus Challenge. The challenge is a Mother Nature meets March Madness-style competition running from Sept. 6 to Oct. 17.

“We are the only school in Utah competing in this Campus Challenge,” said Austin Dennis, SUU’s representative for Outdoor Nation. “Between our amazing location for recreation and the great supporters both on campus and in the larger community of southern Utah, I think we stand a good chance at winning. Anyone across the country can sign up and affiliate themselves with SUU and help us earn points.”

During the six-week competition, participants need to create an account and post photos of their outdoor activities. Activities include bike riding, camping, hiking, hunting, swimming, hammocking, rock climbing, stargazing – anything that gets people recreating outdoors.

Individuals are allowed to post up to five times a day receiving points for each entry. Outdoor Nation tracks entries and has a scoring system it uses to determine the winners.

The university is encouraging students, faculty, alumni and the community to demonstrate school pride and participate as much as possible.

SUU is representing the whole state, competing for prizes such as cash and gear from The North Face Inc. and Recreation Equipment Inc.

SUU Outdoors is giving away weekly prizes to participants while the Outdoor Engagement Center will give away a free night at the Mountain Center for the group on campus that participates the most.

Anyone who signs up for the competition by Sept. 5 will also receive a 50 percent discount coupon from Adidas.
