Forbes names Intermountain Healthcare, University of Utah among America’s Best Employers

ST. GEORGE – Forbes recently released its America’s Best Employers 2016 list, a ranking of companies with more than 5,000 staff members, and two Utah companies were in the top 500: University of Utah at No. 32 and Intermountain Healthcare at No. 95. Both companies are based in Salt Lake City.

To create its annual listing, Forbes conducts an online survey of more than 30,000 U.S. workers anonymously and without the involvement of their employers. The survey asks how likely workers are to recommend their employer to someone else and how they feel about other employers in their industry. The resulting list spanned 25 different industries across the country.

Coming in at Nos. 1, 2 and 3 were Marathon Petroleum in the “Construction, Oil & Gas Operations, Mining and Chemicals” industry, Google in the “IT, Internet, Software & Services” industry and Costco Wholesale in the “Retail (incl. Wholesale, Convenience Stores & Gas Stations)” industry.

University of Utah is categorized in the “Education” industry. Out of the 25 total companies included in the Education industry as part of the Forbes listing, the University of Utah ranked No. 5.  Intermountain Healthcare is in the “Health & Social” industry, which also had 25 companies listed. Intermountain Healthcare was ranked No. 18 of these companies.

The full list of all 500 companies and their industries can be found here.

Jeff Herring, Chief Human Resource Officer for the University of Utah, said this is the second year in a row that the University of Utah has made the list and that they have risen four places in overall listing since last year, from No. 36 to No. 32.

“For us, it’s important as an educational unit,” Herring said. “We focus on the students, which is where we need to be, but we need to recognize that our employee engagement very much correlates to our students’ success. What we can do as an employer is important to be able to then be able to deliver the education and the research that we’re so proud of.”

Herring said these factors all worked together for the university’s success and that their high ranking was a natural extension of these endeavors. He said:

It’s something we’re very proud of and can use (for recruiting), but I think it’s actually just recognition of what we do. We’re not necessarily after the ranking; we’re after doing the good work, and the ranking flows from that.

Intermountain Healthcare’s designation also marks the second straight year of being included among the Forbes listing of the best workplaces in America.

Intermountain Healthcare is a Utah-based, not-for-profit system of 22 hospitals, 185 clinics, a Medical Group with approximately 1,300 employed physicians, a health plans division called SelectHealth and other health services. Helping people live the healthiest lives possible, Intermountain is widely recognized as a leader in transforming healthcare through high quality and sustainable costs.

In a press release from Intermountain, Human Resources Vice President Corey Heller said the rankings help Intermountain in its efforts to recruit future leaders and employees to the company.

“It’s great to receive this designation because when we go to the marketplace we want to recruit from the top talent. We are not solely recruiting among other health care companies. But top-tier talent all industries,” Heller said.

Intermountain was also recently recognized by Becker’s Hospital Review who named the health care company among its “150 Great Places to Work in Healthcare” in the United States. No other Utah hospitals or health systems were included in the listing.

InterContinental Hotels Group was also listed in the top 500, showing a headquarters in Salt Lake City; however, IHG Director of External Corporate Communications Neil Hirsch told St. George News that while there is a reservations center in Salt Lake City, the actual regional headquarters for the Americas is in Atlanta.
