Crash in Washington City adds to ranks of most common type of wreck

WASHINGTON CITY – An average of 6 million vehicle accidents occur each year in the nation, with rear end collisions being among the most common. One such collision occurred in the area of Fairway Drive and Quail Ridge Drive in Washington City Wednesday afternoon.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, out of 6 million auto wrecks reported each year, rear end collisions account for between 30-40 percent of those crashes.

The collision that occurred Wednesday was rather minor, said Ed Kantor, public information officer for the Washington City Police Department.

“We had a passenger car that had just left the Montessori school there and was going to turn south off of Fairway Drive onto Quail Ridge Drive,” Kantor said. “(The driver) stopped for some pedestrian traffic crossing Quail Ridge Drive and and was struck from behind by another vehicle that didn’t stop in time.”

No injuries were reported in the collision, though firefighters who responded to the scene checked a female juvenile for any possible harm before being released from the scene. The juvenile had been in the lead car with an adult female driver.

The male adult driver who rear-ended the lead car was also unharmed and cited for following too close.

Minor damage to the first vehicle was reported, Kantor said. The second car had to be towed away, however, having sustained some front-end damage that made if look as if a large animal had attempted to sit on it.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
