GUNLOCK – The Gunlock Rodeo, which has been held annually since 1945, will ride into town Thursday-Saturday with three nights of rodeo action set to entertain fans young and old with contestants of all ages from throughout the western United States.
In addition to calf roping, breakaway, barrel racing and team roping, the rodeo will feature Gunlock’s unique donkey-watermelon race. This entertaining competition features 10 teams of two people. Teams ride together bareback on a donkey to the end of the arena where one contestant gets off the donkey, picks up a watermelon and gets back on the donkey.
The duos then ride back to the starting line with their watermelon. If all goes well, the melon remains intact and they get to keep it. But, as the donkey has a mind of its own, this rarely happens.
The littlest cowboys and cowgirls can ride a calf and participate in the chicken chase and boot race.
Low gate fees make it possible for the whole family to enjoy a cool evening under the shade of ancient cottonwoods.
Shows will begin at 8 p.m. and tickets are $5. Children 5 and under are free.
Dinner will be available for purchase at concessions. Friday is “Steak ‘n’ Taters night.”
