ST GEORGE — Early next month, Tuacahn Center for the Arts will host a Saving Abuse and Violence Victims through Education conference in Ivins.

Starting at 9 a.m. June 1-2 and free for the community, the conference will address support and healing for domestic violence survivors at Tuacahn High School for the Performing Arts. It will also provide education on how to recognize domestic violence and abuse.

The aim of Saving Abuse and Violence Victims through Education, SAVVE for short, is to educate those who work with domestic violence survivors in any capacity — those that know survivors and those who are survivors — as well as those who just want to know more about the subject.

The conference is intended for medical staff, law enforcement, judicial officials, clergy, family, friends, coworkers and survivors of domestic violence and abuse. To eliminate domestic violence, communities need to work together, SAVVE said in a press release.

According to National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, nearly 20 people per minute in the U.S. are physically abused by an intimate partner, and there are more than 20,000 phone calls per day to domestic violence hotlines nationwide.

Victims may face perpetual abuse. Fear, shame, helplessness and hopelessness are a few of the biggest deterrents for victims to seek help. SAVVE hopes to teach those seeking to help victims, such as family members, police officers and the courts, how best to approach situations of abuse.

According to SAVVE, education is the greatest deterrence to domestic violence, abuse, re-victimization, misconceptions and mistaken labels or arrests.

The conference will help people learn how to recognize and properly deal with the often sophisticated, cunning, manipulative and lying ways of abusive and violent perpetrators to give silent victims needed support.

For those interested in going, you can learn more about the conference and register at the conference website. If you would like to donate time, talent or money to the SAVVE foundation, call 435-862-1477.
