Letter to the Editor: Ghorbani is more in line with traditional Republican ideas than Stewart

OPINION — This is my opinion of the debate between Congressman Stewart and Shireen Ghorbani (that I watched) on Channel 2 on Sept. 17.

First I am a Vietnam veteran pilot. Like Congressman Stewart, I have a star attached to my wings. Like Congressman Stewart, I went into private enterprise after leaving the Air Force.

Unlike Congressman Stewart, I entered a different form of service to the state of Utah after years as a businessman: I became a teacher; Congressman Stewart took a more lucrative path. I was a registered Republican until my party abandoned me and selected Donald Trump as the Republican candidate in 2016. I changed to unaffiliated, which means I cannot vote in primaries for the first time in my life. So where does this lead in the current mid-term election?

I listened very carefully to the debate between Shireen Ghorbani and Congressman Stewart, and in my opinion Shireen Ghorbani’s answers were more in line with my traditional Republican ideas than Congressman Stewart’s.

Ghorbani is for families, controlled spending and letting farmers and ranchers be who they are and not welfare recipients. Stewart is for more military spending for unwinnable wars, handouts to farmers and supports the highest debt this country has seen.

Ghorbani states that the actions of Donald Trump are a danger to our national security. Congressman Stewart by his votes and statements is giving unconditional support to an out of control president. We are supposed to have three balancing governing bodies by our Constitution with check and balances. Currently we have a dictator, and our Congress is not doing their constitutional duties of checking the executive branch.

Congressman Stewart during the debate stated the Russians “attempted” to interfere with the elections, when everyone knows the Russians DID interfere.

In my opinion Shireen Ghorbani has more Republican ideas than Congressman Stewart. If you are a Republican and truly believe in those ideas and foundations then vote for the more Republican candidate, Shireen Ghorbani.

Well, not really. Gorbani is a supporter of socialized healthcare, while today’s republicans just feel like anyone relying on socialized healthcare should just be killed, or at best left to die w/o any sort of medical coverage. Stewart is typical of the self serving corrupt garbage that we call the congress. I’m still waiting for someone to tell me what he does for the average working Utahn.

    • Striker4 September 19, 2018 at 9:03 pm

Vote Democrat ! have a nice day

  • Kilroywashere September 19, 2018 at 5:25 pm

Oh, “Comments” you are so vindictive! But I love it. All I can say is R. Stewart does respond to his constituents vs. all other local politicians who I have contacted. However he ignores the will of his constituents and is pushing the fake N. Corridor highway pork boondoggle, that of course any Wa. County city planner will say we need or get demoted. So he is a REAL politician. Since I need to stack the House of Reps with Republicans to prevent the Democratic Socialist Antifa-loving Party from gaining ground, I will vote for him. It all defaults to the Trump card. I want to keep the wrench in the gears grinding. We finally have a President that is crazy enough to represent what is left of the middle class and isn’t a deep state proxy.

“We finally have a President that is crazy enough to represent what is left of the middle class and isn’t a deep state proxy.”

    • iceplant September 19, 2018 at 6:57 pm

      “…a president that… isn’t a deep state proxy.”

      LOL
No, just an agent of Vladimir Putin.

      • Kilroywashere September 19, 2018 at 8:11 pm

Keep listening to MSNBC Iceplant. The Tavistock institute loves people like you. The Russians are coming, The Russians are coming. Even Comments feels sorry for you. Ignorance is bliss. Sai Babba is also the son of God. He’s dead but hey, he manifested jewelry from the clear light of the void. Wow! Millions upon mlions followed. Even got a few of his followers to agree to … Oh can’t go there. You are brainwashed iceplant. Ignorance is bliss. The Koch Bros have 100,000x more influence on the elections than Russian FSB ops. Or Soros. Or Bezos, Or many whose names are out of the media because they own it. Give it up. WE ARE ALL BOZOS ON THIS BUS.

      • Brian September 19, 2018 at 8:26 pm

Even Bob Woodward admitted after 2 years of investigating that there is zero evidence of Trump colluding with Russia in any way. It’s a tired and thoughtless refrain.

        • Red2Blue310 September 19, 2018 at 11:05 pm

Funny how the American ppl are so distracted by our tool of a president we dont catch whats going on right under our noses. The republicans are passing 2 and 3 bills a day, including damaging our environment, adding billions to military spending we dont need, stupid religious freedom nonsence and selecting more crooks to the judiciary. And tbese fools on social security and medicare worry about socialised medicine for anyone else but themselves.

      • Kilroywashere September 19, 2018 at 8:31 pm

Ok Iceplant, I give in.. . Let’s make America Great ! Or greater… !!! Maxine Waters for President 2020. You heard it here first. Good luck! And I know it will be great because Rachel Maddow says so.

        • iceplant September 20, 2018 at 5:19 am

You go ahead and keep trying to convince yourself that Trump isn’t an agent of Putin.
Every single intelligence agency is in UNANIMOUS agreement. Russia helped Trump win the election. FACT.
Trump’s own lawyer quit because he knows if Trump goes before Mueller, Trump goes to prison.
You know? That whole “orange jumpsuit” thing?
But go ahead and ignore facts when they stare you in the face, Kilroy. You only reaffirm the facts when you continually deny them. Thank you for being so useful. 🙂

p.s. America was great BEFORE Trump.

          • Kilroywashere September 20, 2018 at 1:12 pm

Gee Iceplant are you talking, or is it Rachel Maddow. My guess you get your news from one source. Oh forgot, you watch CNN too. Well I watch all three major MSM channels, so I can know how non informed folks are being herded. From there I watch BBC, for British angle. RT news for the Russian propaganda line. Democracy Now for the true leftist propaganda line. But primarily I watch biz news, CNBC, and FOX Biz for investor knowledge. I also get sources from all over the world on YouTube news channels. I catch NHK and FRANCE news once in awhile. I keep up a lot on China based news outlets as well. So Is am what is called a newsphile. Oh and then there is SG news, and the Independent. Cancelled my subscription to the Spectrum a long time ago. So yea, I make informed decisions based on many resources. You don’t hear the fact that next to China that almost has a global monopoly in this case, that N.Korea has the only other cache of rare earth metals, and that both the US and the Russians want the access. Nope. Without this fact you cannot understand the geo political deal going on there. Do you understand why rare earth metals are even critical to our National interests, especially security? Ihave my doubts. So iceplant, keep spouting political crapola. In the future I will know you are a brainwashed demibot and not worth my notice. Shame on me. Go Maxine 2020!

          • tazzman September 20, 2018 at 1:32 pm

Yes, American was great before Trump. That was why his slogan was Male America Great AGAIN, not Make America Great. Please keep up.

          • iceplant September 20, 2018 at 4:02 pm

Kilroy… you have made no argument and no sense.
Keep spewing those right-wing nutter talking points that nobody with a brain gives a hoot about.
I’ll keep throwing truth and facts right back in your face. Don’t like it? Tough.

          • bikeandfish September 21, 2018 at 10:20 am

            Kilroy:

I am ignoring the tit-for-tat other than the rare earth metal issue. I hadn’t thought about that issue in relation to current geopolitical tensions. I doubt its the only variable but it does make sense. We are all too dependent on technology not to fight over those resources and that is bound to escalate.

Gave me something to think about.

I haven’t watched Maddow in years but I never understood the right’s trolling of her. She’s honest about being biased which is what we expect from quality reporters, if they choose to advocate a perspective. But she’s also one of the most educated journalist out there with a phenomenal team of researchers. It seems inconsistent to attack iceplant over ad hominem arguments but then do the same (plus guilt by association) again Maddow. I rarely see anyone actually challenge her facts they just go to insults and I think that reveals a weakness in argument. I mean I dislike the role Shapiro has in provocation but I have to admit he’s sharp and insightful and often challenges my ideas.

I’m not sure how we end that war of ideologies but thought I would point it out.

  • Happy Commenter September 19, 2018 at 8:28 pm

No she is not more in line with traditional Republican ideas than Stewart. She is a Progressive democrat and that’s as Un-American as you can get. Frozen Vegetable, keep watching that MSNBC…

    • Striker4 September 19, 2018 at 8:51 pm

      iceplant watches MSNBC

      • iceplant September 20, 2018 at 7:13 am

No, I get my news from all sides. I watch everything from CNN to Fox and I listen to the radio too. I try to stay educated on both sides right now and I fact check everything with multiple internet sources as well.

Sorry, fellas. You’re gonna have to do A LOT better if you’re gonna come at me. I’m armed to the teeth with the truth. You seem to be armed with whatever propaganda Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh are feeding you today.

        • tazzman September 20, 2018 at 1:33 pm

Well you can start by getting Trumps slogan right. You said above that America was great before Trump. He agrees. That’s why his slogan was Make America Great AGAIN, not Make America Great. Even Trump knows America was great.

          • iceplant September 20, 2018 at 4:01 pm

I don’t need you to attempt to correct me. I know precisely what Trump’s ridiculous/lame slogan is.
If you’d like to attack me for another post I made, fine. But you’ll get nowhere.
I didn’t say that here, did I? Please try to “keep up.”

  • Jeannette September 20, 2018 at 3:57 am

I can’t stand Stewart for all the reasons mentioned above.  Constitutional Convention could bring some change that the swamp just can’t “man up” and do.  Like term limits, balanced budget, and prohibit campaign donations from outside area of representation.  I can think of some other changes as well that the swamp won’t like and just can’t do.

The House and Senate are full of self-serving people on both sides of the isle and we the people need to shake them up.  Trump has been doing a good job in that department.  Trump has also gotten the economy on a roll.  Trump isn’t all bad, people.  You can vote him out in another year if you don’t like him … but he will get my vote over any swamp-like creatures (i.e. Hillary) that either party put on the ballot.

Although I detest Stewart, my vote will go his way to keep Trump in office and his policies going.  If the Dems succeed in taking over the house, everyone can quit worrying about health care or continued economy correction because the money would be gone soon and the US economy would go bankrupt with no bailouts.

I really personally liked Shireen Ghorbani.  I spoke with her privately.  She is not at all in any way conservative except on issues of the 2nd ammendment.  When my husband asked her how her healthcare objectives would be paid for, she couldn’t say.  All she could say was “healthcare for everyone” is a moral issue.  Every Democrat I’ve ever quizzed on universal healthcare cannot give an answer on how it would be paid for and just say, “it’s a moral issue.  I have to say again that Shireen was very personable and  seemed like someone I could befriend, we just had that question unresolved.

I wish there was a simple solution, but the only economic solution right now is to get behind Trump, and then push for a Constitutional Convention:  1.  term limits, 2.  balanced budget ammendment, and, 3.  reform on donations prohibiting donations from outside of districts.

Get the House and Senate back on track and out of the business of making money!

    • iceplant September 20, 2018 at 7:21 am

“Trump has also gotten the economy on a roll.”

Trump inherited his economy from Obama. You can credit Trump with the stimulus. You cannot credit him with the full economy. That’s not factual. Obama’s last fiscal year ended Sept. 30, 2017. Nine months into Trump’s term. The economy started rolling well before Obama left office. Why is that so hard for people to admit?

    • comments September 20, 2018 at 8:30 am

Everything good trump has done has gone against the R-party line. Everything from tariffs to trying to get rid of illegals. I’m not really a fan of trump, but he’s the best thing about the r-party–a bunch of self-serving corrupt filth. And yes, I’m aware the D-party isn’t worlds better.

    • theone September 20, 2018 at 10:01 am

      Jeannette

It could easily be paid for by shifting the corporate welfare tax benefits we pay for now. The progressives know if they say that out loud those who control that money will shut them down. It’s called greed.
Oh, and we could shift 200 billion from defense spending and provide tuition free education as well as healthcare for all. Republicans don’t want access to education or healthcare and stop at nothing to keep the status quo.

      • tazzman September 20, 2018 at 5:40 pm

$200 billion will NOT pay for free education and healthcare together.

  • Mike September 20, 2018 at 12:07 pm

For most of my life, I voted Republican because they represented fiscal responsibility and strong national defense. WTH happened to that? Now they spend money as well or better than the Democrats. And their current poster child is nothing more than a petulant child. So if my money is going to be wasted anyway, I may as well vote for candidates who don’t try to force misguided religious values down my throat.

    • tazzman September 20, 2018 at 5:39 pm

You ask what happened to a strong national defense. Do you know Trump increased defense spending after the sequestration cuts that Mattis and others stated flat out destroyed their ability to conduct proper maintenance? Of course you know. That’s what happened with that. And when has any party represented fiscal responsibility? Even Reagan ran deficits and increased the debt. The GOP has never represented that, not consistently.

      • Mike September 20, 2018 at 8:28 pm

I proudly served in Reagan’s military. There was a purpose and a vision. And the Soviet Union fell soon after. Trump’s just blustering and throwing money at it, with no plan or purpose. He is helping the KGB fellow rebuild the Communist Russian Empire, though. I would not want to serve under a commander in chief who’d lay my life on the line for a fleeting reason that he’d change his mind about a few minutes later.

  • tazzman September 20, 2018 at 1:37 pm

I will hold my nose and vote for Stewart if the race is close. No way I want another dem in DC. However, if it appears Stewart will win, I will do my usual and vote third party or write in.

    • iceplant September 20, 2018 at 4:04 pm

Hold your nose? Sounds more like you’ll be bowing down and stepping in line.

      • tazzman September 20, 2018 at 5:36 pm

You do have a hard time understanding what people write don’t you? I usually vote third party. That is not stepping in line. Not in this state.

        • iceplant September 20, 2018 at 6:40 pm

Nope. I read you loud and clear.
You said, “I will hold my nose and vote for Stewart if the race is close”
THAT, Mr. Tazz, is called falling in line. What part of that do YOU not understand?
I couldn’t care any less if you vote third-party. I vote third-party. What I don’t do is bow down to Republican shills to avoid keeping Dems out of office. Utter nonsense.

  • jpff September 20, 2018 at 7:30 pm

I do not necessarily like Stewart. The tricks he pulled to get nominated his first time around were ugly, mean, and deceptive. When I met him at a delegates convention, he appeared haughty and too important to speak to me or to even acknowledge a simple hello in passing.
That said, it would be difficult to support most democrats, even though I did support Jim Matheson, as did many other fellow Republicans. I admit that the Democratic National platform contains many wonderful ideas and should be part of both parties’ platforms, but there are some parts of the Democratic platform I could never agree with:
    1. They support abortion openly as a contraception, late-term included, and even encourage laws in states to make it so parents of minors do not have to be informed if their daughter is seeking one;
    2. They want the death penalty abolished.
    3. They want a universal health care that is not truly affordable and has not worked.
    4. They want to force middle and high schools to allow fully functional young men to shower nude next to our daughters and grand daughters.
    5. They want to open the borders and our purse strings to illegals.
Because they have many very good ideas in their platform, I could support democrats if they could consider compromise on the listed issues (except number 4). Their platform says they will fight every attempt to oppose their values, including those listed.
If Ghorbani wants our vote, she would have to state that she would stand for the values of Utah in those issues that are so important to us. Matheson often went against his party vote because he always remembered who voted him in.

    • iceplant September 20, 2018 at 9:09 pm

“4. They want to force middle and high schools to allow fully functional young men to shower nude next to our daughters and grand daughters.”

That is a flat out lie and you know it. Stop listening to Fox News. Holy crap.

  • Kilroywashere September 20, 2018 at 8:17 pm

When you have nothing to say you attack the messenger. Lol. Ok , ooooooh you got me iceplant. Now my turn to insult… You don’t know me. Good luck.

    • iceplant September 20, 2018 at 9:07 pm

      “You don’t know me.”
Never said I wanted to. Good luck.

      • Kilroywashere September 20, 2018 at 10:40 pm

Well Iceplant, once again you default to a personal attack. Here’s how it works. Most of us don’t take this very seriously. Comments and I have disagreed more than once and at the quantum level. Interchange of ideas and humor are two objectives valued by posters. There is a sense of decorum. However you have lost that structure and it is an emotional diatribe. Perhaps you honestly have Trump derangement syndrome. Not an insult honestly, but a REAL mental syndrome. You claim you watch FOX. Ok I don’t disagree, but no doubt you watch FOX to see how the other side is processing your political belief system. IF you want to remain a troll and think your emotions translate to others, and insult those who disagree, (and note an insulting tone or engagement is par, but simply degrading others because you disagree) that is up to you. Might as well have professional lobbyists hired by either Rep or Dem parties to post opinions and game the St George news and destroy free speech. So keep it up, and I will play whack a mole. The fact is we have had true blue racism posted in the comment section, and the OG posters, take care of it. Not that you are racist, just showing there is a sense of decorum. Good luck, and I never asked whether you wanted to know me. That is you. I said you don’t know me. And If you want to be a troll then that is up to you. But my guess is you don’t give a …* Fine. You’ve been called out. So troll along. Take some lessons from Bike &Fish. He represent your point of view. He gets crap, but he is a class act, and he gets his point across. I read what he has to say. And further, I am not anonymous like you, multiple times,I have supplied links to Letters o
to the Editor I have written in SG media sources. Good luck , and I expect another attack. Just a guess. Sincerely Your favorite nuttjob.

        * Ed. ellipsis added.

  • Kilroywashere September 20, 2018 at 8:33 pm

Ignore Iceplant, she is Rachel Maddow in disguise. Except She is a clone. She only knows how to insult and attack the messenger. No logic folks. She is a plant that is cold as ice. We’re all shills or nutjobs if you disagree with Rachel Maddow’ s clown. I meant clone. Sorry. Wait she’s a plant. A Chinese plant, and her messages are coming from Guangzhou. Maybe she is a he? Oops, change those pronouns above, so sorry. Whatever the case just like this comment herein, she is just a little real troll. We can all be like you. It is easy when you are anonymous. Troll on you crazy diamond

  • Kilroywashere September 20, 2018 at 9:11 pm

On a humorous note, I just want folks to picture our Congressman Chris Stewart reading the comments. LOL. Whether its good or bad publicity, the fact the Democratic candidate has been relatively ignored tells you something. Trump Trump trumpet …. get it? Sorry Iceplant I’m voting the party line. Now let’s get 50+ more comments, and folks, give are Democratic candidate some comments. And Iceplant I mean you no disrespect but you deserved the whack a mole.

    • iceplant September 21, 2018 at 9:57 am

Boy, I triggered you something fierce.
I hope we can continue to have a back and forth where you come undone over facts.
      Cheers, Kilroy!
