Cheryl Alene Walker

Dec. 6, 1957 – Dec. 6, 2021

Cheryl “Alene” Walker passed away on her 64th birthday, Dec. 6, 2021, surrounded by her loving family. She was born Dec. 6, 1957, to Charles Ellison Beavers and Leila Helen Evans in Farmington, New Mexico. Growing up she adored her parents who taught her the value of hard work, resourcefulness and how to play a mean game of marbles and ping pong.

Alene graduated from Kirtland Central High School and went on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology from Brigham Young University. While studying at BYU she met and fell in love with Grady Leroy Walker. They were married on July 24, 1978. They were blessed with three children, two sons and a daughter, who meant the world to her.

She was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and always had a strong testimony of Jesus Christ. She served in many callings at the ward and stake level.  She especially loved serving in Relief Society and with the Young Women. She said that “work is a sign of love and when you help someone you are loving them.” This was a life motto she lived by every day.

After her children were grown, she decided to go back to school to earn a master’s degree and became certified as a school counselor and administrator. She loved working at the elementary school level and was always positive and encouraging to the students and teachers she worked with.

She developed many hobbies during her life and used them to bless others. She played the piano beautifully, was a wonderful cook and a talented seamstress. She made pajamas for each of her grandchildren every year for Christmas, despite the challenge of keeping up with their ever-changing sizes. One of her most treasured projects was a red, white, and blue star pattern “honor quilt” she made with her mother to honor her husband Grady’s contribution in the military.

She is survived by her husband Grady, her children Paul Walker (Kristy), Redlands, California; Stacy Burtenshaw (Jeremy), Spokane, Washington; Darren Walker (Kim), Bountiful, Utah. As well as 14 grandchildren who have fond memories of playing games, camping, learning about family history, doing crafts and baking treats with their beloved Gramma.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 11, 2021, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 591 W. 500 N., St. George, Utah. A viewing will be held prior from 3-3:45 p.m. Interment will take place on Monday, Dec. 13, 2021, at the Kirtland, New Mexico, cemetery with a graveside service at 10 a.m.

Family and friends are invited to share tributes online at SerenityStG.com. Arrangements and memorial tree planting by Serenity Funeral Home of Southern Utah, 435-986-9100.
