ST. GEORGE — Pine View High School twins Dominique and Marcus McKenzie announced on Monday that they have switched their collegiate commitments and now plan to play football for the Brigham Young University Cougars.
As previously reported in St. George News in September, the McKenzie brothers had both originally committed to play for the Virginia Cavaliers.
Since then, University of Virginia head coach Bronco Mendenhall, who was BYU’s head coach prior to taking the Virginia job, announced he is leaving the program after six years at the helm. Mendenhall’s impending departure was announced on Dec. 2.
The McKenzies, who are both listed as being 6-foot-0 and weighing 170 pounds, have been standouts on the Panthers’ football and track programs. They’ve been utilized in various roles on the gridiron, including wide receiver, cornerback and kick returner. At last spring’s 4A state track meet, the McKenzies, then juniors, sprinted to 1-2 sweeps in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter races, in addition to both competing in the long jump.
The McKenzies are scheduled to officially sign their letters of intent on Wednesday, the first day of the football early signing period. Joining them in the signing ceremony will be Pine View teammate Peter Falaniko, a 6-foot-4, 310-pound offensive lineman who has also announced his intention to sign with BYU.
Wednesday’s signing event is scheduled to take place at 11:45 a.m. inside Pine View High School’s lecture hall.
