ST. GEORGE – A portion of lawn and sidewalk in front of the Desert Rose Apartment complex in St. George was cordoned off by yellow tape Friday afternoon as law enforcement officers went through a residence and brought out multiple containers of alleged narcotics and associated paraphernalia.

Earlier that morning, a Washington County Sheriff’s deputy was serving court papers at an apartment at 2929 E. 450 North, sheriff’s Sgt. Jared Parry said. At the time the deputy serving the papers smelled possible marijuana coming from somewhere within the apartment. A search warrant was obtained and the apartment was subsequently searched.

“They got there and saw indicators of marijuana and mushrooms,” Parry said. “At that point the Washington County Drug Task Force was contacted and we’ve been here ever since helping to process the scene.”

Members of the task force were called in around noon and were joined by Drug Enforcement Administration agents.

A makeshift processing center was set up outside of the apartment complex as task force members in hazmat suits went in and brought out totes, mason jars, and other items and set them on or by tables waiting to be examined and cataloged.

“What there are, are containers of mushrooms,” Parry said. “I know there are finished product; there are some being grown; so there’s multiple stages of the process going on.”

As of 4 p.m., three people had been detained and were being questioned by law enforcement, Parry said. At that time no one had been arrested, though any charges brought may be enhanced due to the location being near Pine View High School. Anywhere within 1,000 feet of a school is typically considered a drug-free zone.

So far no weapons had been found in the apartment, Parry said, though the task force was still going though the apartment.

A hazardous materials team had been contacted to come and claim the drugs found by the deputies, but had yet to arrive from out of town.

The Southwest Utah Public Health Department had also been contacted to determine if there are any potential health risks lingering in the searched apartment.

Task force members and DEA agents were still going through the apartment and began to set up portable lights in case they remained at the scene after the sun went down.

At 5:45 p.m. task force members and DEA agents were still on scene.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement representatives on scene and may not contain the full scope of findings. Any persons allegedly involved are considered innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.

All of that for some pot and some shrooms? They look like somebody was trying to make a nuclear weapon.

    • Huh? January 24, 2015 at 12:00 am

Well when you’re wondering if there could possibly be other drugs in the residence (like a highly explosive and toxic meth lab) it’s better to take precautions. Who knows what else these morons could have been doing in that apartment.

    • Jerbear January 26, 2015 at 8:59 pm

The people that got busted for the shrumes/paraphernalia as shown above were (&still are ) my friends. Society operates on the materialistic tendencies of its members, as is promoted by the media. This is no different: law enforcement is simply another mechanism for revenue. There is NOTHING WRONG with the utilization of psilocyblin mushrooms/ LSD, but it is stigmatized just like weed,,,,

  • Koolaid January 23, 2015 at 7:48 pm

Everyday we read of a drug bust, a shooting, an assault, a robbery or some other crime. Yet, locals think of their town as Mayberry with all these crimes as being caused by outsiders or illegals. Not so. That ‘D’ on the hill stands for Denial to all the criminal and social woes that exist here.

  • ladybugavenger January 23, 2015 at 7:59 pm

The people in the apartment complex were customers?

    • Nunya January 24, 2015 at 10:45 am

That’s a stupid thing to say! I’m sure there are mostly very nice, upstanding, law-abiding citizens living there. Most of them were probably just as shocked, if not more so, by the events that took place yesterday. And don’t categorize an entire complex by the actions of one tenant!

      • ladybugavenger January 24, 2015 at 12:00 pm

I’m sure they didn’t smell the pot either lol shocking!

      • ladybugavenger January 24, 2015 at 12:07 pm

As you notice, there is a question mark at the end of my comment. But your response was quit passionate. You stood up for a whole apartment complex. Yep, sure the neighbors didn’t smell marijuana and are very shocked, whatever!

We need to get this stuff legalized the cops took away this guy’s lively hood and also they will evict him so he will be homeless when he is released. Adults should be able to do what hbthey want these kinds of plants. They r both very meditional. The government andLot of people thinks we all need to be molly mormon. I think this guy is an entrepreneur and should be released and his property returned

    • DUEMAS January 23, 2015 at 11:39 pm

      DUEMAS

    • Huh? January 23, 2015 at 11:58 pm

I’m sorry Johndoe but you need to come to the understanding there are clear definitions of what is right and wrong. What you have learned throughout the short span of your life may not be right… You may think you are, but the law says different and they can legally haul anyone off who decides not to comply with the law. Years of research and harsh experiences with drugs like these are why the government have deemed them illegal. You may not agree with it, but you should comply with it because what happened to this entrepreneur and his property is going to continue to happen in Utah for years to come. I know I won’t change your mind, but just remember that even though you disagree you will still be hauled off for breaking the law 🙂

      • Abouttime January 24, 2015 at 9:16 am

Couldn’t agree more. It is the governments responsibility to protect us and we should not question it!

        • ladybugavenger January 24, 2015 at 12:02 pm

Holy cow…comment of the day! Don’t question the government hahahaha

          • One for the road January 24, 2015 at 6:05 pm

Hello hello. Is this the government.? Hello… Hello… Is there anybody there.? Hellloooo… Hellloooo…. why is no one answering the phone.? Hellloooo.. Oh well forget it. Must be some kind of holiday

      • Chris January 24, 2015 at 11:02 am

“Years of research and harsh experiences with drugs like these” have shown that alcohol is equally harmful. Do you support making alcoholic beverages illegal? Why do you expect government to attempt to protect us from everything that may not be good for us? Years of research and harsh experience have shown that fatty foods are not good for us. Should government outlaw them as well? It sounds like you have an affinity for the liberal “nanny” state.

        • villager January 24, 2015 at 2:43 pm

          Chris, you nailed it.
The system hasn’t found a way to tax it without people complaining too much.
There is still a lot of controversy. Alcohol was prohibited at one time in history.

          • mo ferguson January 26, 2015 at 8:36 am

CHRIS, I like bacon. VILLAGER, gee I hope they don’t tax bacon any more.

      • johndoe January 24, 2015 at 10:48 pm

What’s wrong is the government and many people here think of this as wrong and getting people addicted. If someone is gonna try it they r just gonna go else where there is no stopping it. Why stop people from having a good time this is still america

        • church profit(non prophet) January 25, 2015 at 3:39 am

Look! You obviously DO NOT know how bad things can get if not under control. If you have been elsewhere and seen how bad tougher cities can get. You would not want this town to ever get that bad! Unless you are as dumb as you sound, or have no loved ones around. You sound very sheltered. I suggest you think before you speak. It can be a bad habit.

        • notsokoolaid January 25, 2015 at 5:41 pm

@JOHNDOE some people think abusing and rapeing children is a fun way to have a good time! By your logic the government should just leave them alone, after all they are just looking to have a fun good time.

    • church profit(non prophet) January 24, 2015 at 7:36 am

John doe is writer for the spectrum, LOL. Another straight A student from southern Utah. THIS GUY’S , LOL…..HBTHEY and MEDITiONAL…..SMH! Before you go run off at the mouth make sure you can spell and punctuate. You sound like a druggie…..rotflmao!!!

      • johndoe January 24, 2015 at 10:53 pm

Clearly u have no idea what any of the effects really are of these plants except what people want u to think and I was born and raised here and I don’t work for the spectrum

        • church profit(non prophet) January 25, 2015 at 3:51 am

Really? I barely got to this comment, and you sound like you were born and raised here! I think the fist time I got mushed out was in “93” doing things you only dream about. I do not think that every one would have a good trip. I have seen many bad ones, and friends almost kill each other. So if you would like to keep hearing about bad tragedies in your neck of the woods. Keep promoting drug usage that it sounds like you know little about. Oh yeah thoughts are powerful. Where you are in Life right now, is a product of your thoughts. Sounds like you need to get some ideas in order. Get past this slump in your way of thinking…..

    • Texan@Heart January 24, 2015 at 8:59 am

Religion has nothing to do with federal laws… He broke the law, simple as that. He knew the rules for living in that complex (which is a family complex) when he signed the lease. Property? Entrepreneur? It’s his own (…) fault that he is now to be evicted and “out of a job”. Legalizing this (…) won’t do any good, it’ll just increase the stupidity in this town. He made his choice, now he has to deal with the consequences that come with it.

      Ed. ellipses

      • johndoe January 24, 2015 at 10:57 pm

Where were we when the laws were put in place

  • Always a better way... January 24, 2015 at 12:14 am

    1. Drugs, of any kind, do not have to be used to find happiness in this vast world of possibilities… It is one way to find temporary pleasure, but a world full of despair now awaits these criminals.

    2. Why do things that are illegal? If you don’t live with guilt for the things you’re doing, you probably will end up with the consequences and they suck. People might think I’m a slave to the system since I comply to the law, but I can guarantee I’m free from hiding from the law and free from the bars that would incarcerate me for breaking it. I will also be free from the (…) that follows incarceration when my life was ruined by my choices.

    3. If you’re still reading, awesome! 🙂 You likely understand the concept that obedience brings more freedom than any wrong choice ever could. Keep it up because you will go far in this life! If you don’t agree with that concept I bet you anything you will come to find out for yourself how true it is. Don’t say it’s wrong if you haven’t found out for yourself 😉

  • Abouttime January 24, 2015 at 8:25 am

I am glad to see they are cracking down on these dangerous drugs. They should put this guy away for life so he never has another chance to get more people addicted to drugs that cause people to go crazy or worse, kill someone!

I’ve never encountered mushrooms that were in canning jars .
It almost sounds like pot heads had gotten the munchies and had a fondness for mushroom soup .
Who gets high off mushrooms in canning jars ?

    • bung chow January 24, 2015 at 5:04 pm

You propagate what is called micylium in the jars and then mix it with coconut hair in the bins and mushrooms grow out of that. Microbiology is pretty cool and interesting.

Thanks for the update . . . I’ve been out of the loop awhile .

  • TrickorTreat January 24, 2015 at 10:22 am

Why is one dressed up like he’s ready to go dancing in the rain, the other like a large chicken, and the other like an ebola emergency tech. It’s alittle pot a little mushroom. It doesn’t seem to be harmful to the ones that’s use it. Look at the folks in Kayenta there still kicking. I guess it for protection I wish Koolaids folks would have used protection. Then the rest of us wouldn’t be suffering.

    • aboutime January 24, 2015 at 11:37 pm

Bwaahaaaahaa chicken, dancing in the rain and Ebola LOL. I thought the same thing. All propaganda to get more funding for the war on drugs. Those people are like “why did they pull pull our canning supplies out? We can peaches for cryin out loud”.

      • mo ferguson January 26, 2015 at 8:43 am

Hahaha….Ebola. Reminds me of the Word of The Day a few months ago.
EBOLA, as used in a sentence: My cousin went bowling last night….ebola perfect game. Hahahahaha……

In my country jon doe is a stupid fish like dumb bass. If you want to see what they look like go to wash count booking see the deadbeats for your self. I’m sure this mushroom shaped drug is not the only mushroom shaped object placed his they’re mouth. Just because u put mushroom in mouth don’t mean you need to swallow, right Koolaid.

  • S Steed January 24, 2015 at 6:00 pm

The real criminals here are the police. How much of my money did these a-holes waste so they could ruin someone’s life? It wouldn’t be a problem if these drugs came off a military transport plane; but the criminals that run this country don’t like competition. And for everyone who thinks obedience is the answer and that your government wants what is best for you: pick up a history book. People in power tend to abuse it and it is our job to call B.S. when its B.S. For the people who think drugs are bad: try it before you bash it. Marijuana is a gift from god. It is versatile, and better for you (as a pain killer) than anything you can buy in the pharmacy. It slows down time and makes you super focused on whatever your doing. It is a wonderful thing and I would recommend it to anyone with chronic pain or people who’s brain is always going a thousand miles per hour.

All the pot heads that are trying to legalize marijuana show up to vote for it 2-3 days late. That’s why it will never be legalized here.

  • Warren Jfs January 24, 2015 at 10:52 pm

Dear Mr. Steed, it’s because of this attitude you and your family was removed from the twin cities on the Arz Ut state line. I had no choice in this matter do to your attitude. As you are well aware a number of your kinfolk have been in this type of lifestyle for some time now and have not I repeat have not improved in society. As you are aware in the bad choices in which you and your family have made you have become lost. You are now considered by this society as lost boy and girls. This means you wonder with out direction. As the arrest show you are trying to live by my example, by being arrested, but please don’t do drugs and alcohal. It damages your brain and with the DNA testing that has been completed on many of the square headed people that you know, there are not a lot of brain cells to start with. So for the safety of you and yours please say no to drugs.as you are also aware the word steed spelled backword Is Deets which is the name of the Devils first cousin once removed. This may be a quincidence or it true what great great pa pa appa chief said. H E double tooth picks spelled backword is htoot elbuod e hm or the devil of the steed in shaprohawkina nation. Any way you sniff it, smoke it, shoot it or drink it, or just rub one out a steed is a deets is a drug addict devil.

    • S Steed January 25, 2015 at 9:52 am

Oh Mr. JFS, I think you overestimate your influence in my affairs because I chose to leave and my family is still there. I don’t trust you as an indicator of improvement in any form, and I’ve long since stopped caring how society choses to label me. While it is true that I once was lost: now I’m found, and like you: I was blind, but now I see. I have managed to retain enough brain cells in my damaged DNA to recognize a red herring and ad hominem. As for the Steed/Deets issue: I should remind you that its your middle name. And you chose that label so at least we have that in common.

  • ladybugavenger January 25, 2015 at 8:57 am

Bad drugs…this town is full of drugs. I wouldn’t be shocked if someone was cooking meth in my apartment complex. So people don’t be shocked when there’s a bust in your neighborhood. Drugs are all around.

  • 1st grade reading level January 25, 2015 at 9:36 am

I have never in my life read a string of more poorly written posts. The only reason I kept reading was due to the comic display of grammatical errors in defense to manufacturing drugs in a ghetto apartment. God bless the ejukashun in this town.

  • Harmonica Lewinsky January 25, 2015 at 2:16 pm

I agree, bunny2015, while the levels of idiocy are in fact reaching new levels, I strongly feel that if we all joined together we could actually make this the ultimate moronic thread composed of the attitudes and alter-ego’s of southern Utahs fine citizens. And no Im not being sarcastic one bit either because lets face it, pot kills! And mushrooms cause athletes foot and lead to bathsalts and crocodile! Less school field trips, more jails!

  • koolaid January 25, 2015 at 4:36 pm

In the words of Nancy Reagan, just say “No”. There, drug problem fixed.
