ST. GEORGE — Snow Canyon High School’s cheer team made history this weekend at state championships.
During the state cheer championship Saturday, Snow Canyon’s Warriors cheer team won first place in all five routine categories the team competed in: show cheer, pom, timeout dance, timeout cheer and fight song. The team also won the region championship with first place in all five categories a couple of weeks ago.
“It’s like a history-in-the-making type of deal for these girls this year,” Snow Canyon’s head coach said.
Last year, the Warriors placed first in all five categories at the region championship but not at state.
“I think we went in a little overconfident and kind of let it get to our heads,” the coach said of last year’s competition, explaining that this year the coaches focused more on confidence and team bonding. She said the team remained humble and gave it their all at practices, adding that she attributes the team’s success at the state championship to the girls’ hard work and their drive to better each other during and outside of practices.
“Our motto 100 percent of the time is called ‘all in,'” she said. “So every day we always ask, ‘Are you all in?'”
Besides Snow Canyon, other cheer teams from Southern Utah competed and placed in some categories at the region competition. Results from the competition show Cedar High School’s cheer team placed third and Canyon View High School’s cheer team placed second in the fight song category. Desert Hills High School’s cheer team placed second in the show cheer category.
“The girls worked extra hard,” the Snow Canyon coach said of the Warriors cheer team. “They deserve it. They came to win, and that’s what they did.”
